Company Parties and Lawsuits

hr outsourcing company parties

Company parties. They rarely go off without a hitch. And if you factor in the use of alcohol there is usually at least one minor incident that occurs. Looking at various articles on the internet I was amazed at what some people have done at company parties where alcohol is served/consumed. People were talking about hooking up with coworkers, arguments that ended in fist fights and jokes (of the racial variety) that went a rye. Sometimes these incidents are taken in stride and swept under the rug but on some occasions lawsuits are accompanied with such altercations. There are a few basic rules to follow in order to get through a company party with as little drama as possible.

The number one rule is, if possible, not even to serve alcohol. This is easier when having a breakfast or lunch party at the office. By having the party at the office, employees will be less inclined to want to drink, especially if it is early in the morning. If the party you are having is a dinner party and there will be alcohol served there are a few other rules that can be implemented in order for everyone to have a fun, safe, lawsuit free time.

If having a dinner party with alcohol make sure that employees are allowed to invite spouses or significant others. This will allow the “social drinkers” to at least be held in check and if overly intoxicated receive a safe ride home. Try and never have an open bar (soft drinks and water ok) but instead use drink tickets or have a cash only bar.

When serving alcohol make sure that you always serve food and plenty of other options such as soft drinks, juice, coffee and water. Do not serve alcohol for the last hour or hour and a half to let people sober up a little. Another option is to arrange for a free taxi service to take people home or provide hotel rooms for intoxicated employees.

The best way to get through a company part without having any incidents is to use your best judgment. If you feel you are getting a little lightheaded slowdown. Know that you are at a work function and you still need to act professional. Take responsibility for your actions and have a safe and memorable party.
